Audrey was raised in Florida, near a circus. Her father was an artist and painted circus illustration. Colorful people surrounded her in her youth as well as the many trips that the family took, especially their trip to Mexico. It was during this time, at the ripe age of three, that Audrey learned to read and fell in love with everything about literature. In fourth grade she decided she wanted to be children's writer, an ambition she has realized in her adult life. After meeting and marrying her husband Don, Audrey started to write her children's books. However it was only after her son, Bruce, was born that she seriously started writing and pursuing a career as an author. For Audrey, being author combines all of the aspects that she loves about the arts, including literature, art, music, drama, and even dance so much so that she tries to fill each of her books with these aspects. Audrey has won many awards for her books including: Hoosier Award, NCTE Notable children's Trade Book, Christopher Award, Indiana Young Readers Award, and Young Readers Award to name a few. From reading the books and seeing the pictures she take most of her fantastical stories from her childhood with the circus and from her active imagination fostered at such a young age.
