Classroom Applications
Don and Audrey use colorful stories and illustrations to captivate their audience. After reading some of their books I got some great classroom ideas for many different grade levels. For instance Audrey wrote a series of books that not only helps students to learn their alphabet in the correct order, but helps them to put the words in order to form a word and then a sentence. This would be a great book for pre-k and for kindergarten. For 1st, 2nd, and 3rd a number of different books can be used to illustrate skills such as tall tales, inferring, imagery, and so many other literacy skills. While researching different lesson ideas I came across a lesson plan from Scholastic Books that a teacher had made based on the book the Bunyans. This teacher used the fantasy story book to teach about the different landmarks as well as reviewing tall tales. Thinking about my second grade class for next placement I thought about the book Quick as a Cricket which would be great to enhance young reader visualization and for students to hear alliteration. On Audrey's website she has set up many different activities that teacher can use with her books such as coloring pages and suggestions for which type of reader would like what book. Audrey also has a couple of seasonal books that the students would enjoy.I would use these books as high as fourth grade, because they are easy reads and fun for that time of year. Overall Don and Audrey's books a mostly used to teach literature, but some books like The Bunyan's can be used for cross curricular learning.
